UK Government Confirms Minimum Wage Increase for March 2026 : New Rates Revealed

Workers across the United Kingdom will see an increase in their wages as the government confirms new National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates starting from April 1, 2026. The decision follows recommendations from the independent Low Pay Commission, which reviews wage levels each year to ensure that lower-paid workers keep pace with the rising cost of living and general earnings growth. These changes will affect millions of employees in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

National Living Wage Increase for Adults

The most important update in 2026 is the rise in the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over. From April 2026, the hourly rate will increase from £12.21 to £12.71. This change represents a 4.1 percent increase and aims to keep the wage floor close to two-thirds of the country’s median earnings.

For someone working a full-time schedule of around 37.5 hours per week, the increase could add roughly £975 to their annual income before tax. Although the percentage increase is smaller than in some previous years, it still offers an important financial boost for workers who rely on minimum wage jobs.

Higher Pay Growth for Younger Workers

Young workers aged between 18 and 20 will experience the largest wage increase in the 2026 update. Their hourly rate will rise from £10.00 to £10.85, which is an increase of 85 pence per hour. This represents about an 8.5 percent rise, significantly higher than the increase for older workers.

The government has stated that this move is part of a longer-term plan to gradually align youth wage rates with the adult National Living Wage. In the future, there may be a single minimum wage rate for all workers aged 18 and above.

Pay Increase for Teen Workers and Apprentices

Workers aged 16 to 17 and those on apprenticeship pay rates will also benefit from the new wage structure. Their minimum hourly rate will increase from £7.55 to £8.00. This 6 percent rise ensures that young people who are just entering the workforce or completing vocational training still receive fair pay increases.

It is important to remember that apprentices aged 19 or older who have completed the first year of their apprenticeship must be paid according to their age category. For example, a 21-year-old apprentice must receive the National Living Wage rather than the lower apprentice rate.
